Important Facts on High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can play a role in many major diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. It is important to know whether you have high blood pressure and to keep an eye on it if you are at or near 140/90, when you are considered to have hypertension. Even if only one of these numbers is high -- for example, 119/92 -- it is till a cause for concern and you should visit with your physician as soon as possible.

If you have high blood pressure, your doctor may recommend that you follow a restrictedmeasuring blood pressure  diet. For anyone concerned about their blood pressure, a diet low in sodium (salt) will help to keep your numbers at bay. This does not mean just table salt. Many packaged foods have a large amount of sodium in them, even though they do not taste salty. Reading the nutritional labels on all items that you buy will let you know which foods will be okay to eat and which will not. Drinking plenty of water, preferably 12-8oz glasses per day, will help as well.

Those who are overweight and have rising blood pressure numbers should pay special attention to what they eat, as people in this category are at particular risk of developing heart disease. Not only will you want to watch your sodium intake, but you will also need to cut calories and consume very small amounts of saturated and trans fat.

The more you know about your body and your health status -- including your blood pressure numbers -- the more control you can have over avoiding certain diseases and conditions in the future.
