What is Bontril? What is it needed for?

Bontril is a prescription drug that can be useful in certain circumstances for those with a body-mass index (BMI) over 30. However, some important details related to its use -like the side effects and its safety in the long-term- are worth to consider before taking it.

Bontril acts in the central nervous system, stimulating the hypothalamus´ satiety center, as well as the limbic regions of the brain. So Bontril effects are basically appetite suppression and stimulation.

It is important to take this drug only under medical prescription and regular control, not only because of the dangerous side effects it may produce -it has some points in common with illicit amphetamines- but also because it can become addictive. So the doctor has to decide whether Bontril may be a suitable option for every particular case or not. Once prescribed, in case of experiencing any of the most common side effects -dizziness, changes in the mood, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, suppressed libido, tremor, rapid breathing, confusion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps or dry mouth- the doctor must be quickly informed.

When other medications have to be taken, the doctor must be aware; especially those related to high blood pressure or MAO inhibitors and other weight loss medicines. However, in general Bontril is not advised for those who previously suffered heart disorders, high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism. Decongestants and caffeine must also be avoided, along with any other medicine that may increase the heart rate.

As with any other appetite suppressant, Bontril should be used as a part of a weight loss program that includes diet and exercise in order to achieve conclusive results. However, those programs usually last in time, while Bontril is only a short-term aid to start a lower-calorie diet, during the difficult first weeks of changes. In fact, its use is advised for no more than a couple of weeks. The idea is to prolong the new healthier alimentation and exercise habits in time without depending on any drugs.
