Setting Goals for a Healthy Lifestyle

Once you decide to lose weight it can become overwhelming and frustrating. Where to begin? The first thing you need to do is sit down and figure out what your goals are. What is the main goal? A certain weight? A certain size? Inches lost on particular body parts? You want to make sure it is something you can measure objectively. Twenty pounds, a size 8 dress, 2 inches in the waist. When you have the final goal set you need to than figure out a reasonable time frame, break it down and set smaller goals along the way.

Short term goals will help keep you focused on your main objective. It is important to remember to set reasonable goals within reasonable time frames. You probably aren't going to lose 20lbs in one month, however, 20lbs in four months is more attainable and you can set short term goals to lose 5lbs a month. Or set even smaller goals of losing 1-2lbs a week. It is important to set your goals so they are reasonable and attainable. Otherwise you will get frustrated and give up easier.

Writing the goals down on a piece of paper and posting it where you will see it daily will help keep you on track. As you achieve each goal you can mark it off and keep track of your progress visibly. If you find your goals are too hard, rewrite them or give yourself more time. You will feel better about your progress if you have small goals along the way that you achieve and mark off as you head towards your final goal.

Oftentimes when trying to lose weight you may slip back and gain a few pounds, or eat too much and feel you need to throw in the towel. By keeping yourself accountable and having your goals written out, you can get back on track. It may be helpful to enable the help of a friend or spouse to keep you accountable to sticking to your goals and time frames. The purpose of goal setting with weight loss is set yourself up for success and give yourself a clear and concise plan to start living a healthier lifestyle.
