Secrets Of The National Weight Control Registry

Someone once said success leaves clues. When it comes to losing weight and keeping it off, no one has access to more of those secrets than the experts with The National Weight Loss Control Registry.

Formed in 1994 by Rena Wing from Boston Medical School and James Hill from the University of Colorado, the registry is devoted to understanding why some people lose weight and keep it off and others fail.

Most self-help gurus will tell you how they became successful. They found someone who had the job or body they wanted, and they modeled their behavior after that mentor, coach or hero. One thing they did not do is start reinventing the wheel.

Becoming more disciplined

One of the secrets revealed by successful dieters who are being tracked by the program Weight Controlis the fact they tend to be more disciplined people.

Many of the people who lost weight and kept it off were people with specific characteristics and traits. They tend to be more controlled, methodical. They like structure and routine. To lose weight, you don't have to become a control freak, but it may help if you adopt a few of the habits of people who have had long-term success.

Instead of going with the flow, have fun by making exercise charts. Keep a journal. If it seems too boring to you to write down everything, then use your imagination and be creative. Draw pictures of apples to represent the fruit you eat every day, a drumstick for protein servings, a piece of bread for carbohydrates and carrots for vegetables. Just find a way to be organized and track your goals and success.

Why we fail at diets

One of the reasons the National Weight Control Registry came into being is the fact that statistically 95 percent of all dieters fail.

That means five percent of dieters are doing something right. Experts are tracking more than 5,000 people who lost significant weight. They did not regain the weight for at least a year. In fact, most people have kept the weight off for five years. Participants have to have lost at least 30 pounds.

Go low-fat, not low-carb

A major secret revealed by the Weight Control Registry is the fact that a low-fat diet, not a low-carb diet helped participants stay trim.

In addition to choosing low-fat foods, the participants tended to eat a balanced diet, reduce their portion sizes and exercise on a regular basis.
