Be Wary Of The Weightloss Patch And Other Diet Scams

Some people lose weight when they use a weightloss patch, try a new diet pill or join a weight watchers program. It's not that the diet patches or weight loss pills are so powerful, but they can have a placebo affect.

You should be wary of diet patches for weight loss, especially in light of the Federal Trade Commission's lawsuits against manufacturers of the miracle patches.

Bogus weight loss claims

The Federal Trade Commission sued Transdermal Products International Marketing Corp. based in Pennsylvania for misleading customers who believed the skin diet patch would help them lose weight.

The main ingredient in their patches is sea kelp.

In addition to diet patches, be skeptical of any topical cream, body wrap or topical Weightloss Patcheslotions that claim to melt away the fat.

The Transdermal patches were sold under several brand names including Revo Patch, Svelt Patch, LePatch and Z Patch.

Active ingredients in diet patches

Most patches that are meant to help burn fat or act as an appetite suppressant deliver their power through the skin.

When shopping for diet patches, you may see several main ingredients such as chromium, which helps stabilize blood sugar. While chromium is beneficial, it's best to take them as pills.

Next, guarana is a common ingredient in weight loss patches. It's a stimulant, which has only mild benefits that don't outweigh the harmful affects of caffeine on the system.

You may also see HCA or hydroxycitric acid in the form of garcinia cambogia. HCA is supposed to prevent carbs from turning into fat and focus vesiculosus or bladderwrack with iodine. Iodine may help people with a sluggish thyroid.

Tips for using diet patches

Finally, most of us have heard of birth control patches, nicotine patches, hormone replacement patches and even diabetes patches. It's true, chemicals, drugs and other ingredients can be administered through the skin.

  • If you do choose to try a patch for weight loss, apply it to your upper body, preferably an area without hair.
  • You can usually leave a patch on for 24 hours.
  • Drink plenty of water when wearing a patch.
  • If you don't feel comfortable with the patch or it's not working, write to the manufacturer with your complaints.
