Ditch Fads To Achieve Permanent Weight Loss

Many people try fad diets and diet products, which promise fast results for losing weight. Ironically, diet products and deprivation diets are just as likely to make you fat as overeating at fast food restaurants.

If you look at many of the ingredients listed on many so-called diet foods, you may see high fructose corn syrup, sugar and other ingredients that actually increase your appetite. If you want to achieve permanent weight loss you have to be a conscious consumer of food products. You have to be skeptical of diets, especially those that require you to decrease your caloric intake by more than 20 to 30 percent of the amount you need to maintain your current weight.

When it comes to proper eating habits to achieve permanent weight loss, most fitness experts recommend women eat at least 5 small meals a day, while men should consume 6 mini-meals or maxi-snacks. They suggest combining lean protein with servings of vegetables and starchy carbohydrates such as brown rice.

To achieve permanent weight loss, you have to start by looking at what you eat and what you drink. Limit the amount of empty calories.

In his book Fat Land, author Greg Critser points out a joint study by Harvard University and Boston Children's Hospital where researchers concluded excess liquid calories led to obesity in children. "One extra soft drink a day gave a child a 60 percent greater chance of becoming obese," Critser writes. Researchers said the consumption of sugar or high fructose corn syrup in sweetened drinks is associated with obesity in children. Without a doubt, the first step to permanent weight loss is to ditch the empty calorie drinks and instead drink water, green or herbal teas. Don't think you can substitute diet soda for water because researchers have consistently shown artificial sweeteners increases your appetite and dramatically increase your odds of becoming overweight or obese.

An estimated two of every three American adults is considered overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and people from other countries are following the same path as fast food infiltrates societies around the world.

Eric Schlosser, the author of Fast Food Nation, writes how in 1970 Americans spent $6 billion on fast food. In 2000, that number shot up to $110 billion.

"Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software, or new cars," he writes. "They spend more on fast food than on books, magazines, newspapers, videos, and recorded music combined."

When you realize a pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, it's easy to see how a person can put on fat fast by eating at restaurants and fast food restaurants where meals are super sized and loaded with bad fats and sugars that increase your appetite.

Some people turn to appetite suppressants and stimulants because they hope it will help them achieve permanent weight loss. Other people decide to have gastric bypass or lap-band surgery to reduce their stomach capacity. But you can achieve permanent weight loss by simply reducing your caloric intake slightly and increasing your exercise intensity and frequency.

In addition to proper eating and exercise habits, consider detoxification and cleansing programs. A naturopathic physician who specializes in permanent weight loss can help you achieve the results you want by restoring liver function, proper thyroid metabolism and proper digestion.

In a world of fast food and inactivity, it's easy to see why people become overweight and obese. You may think you need special cognitive-behavioral therapy to overcome the complex behavioral and biological struggle known as obesity. But in reality, you can achieve permanent weight loss by taking small steps toward your lifelong goal of being fit. You will notice a snowball effect. When you give up regular or diet soda pop for a month, you may notice your appetite naturally decrease. When you replace fast food with lean proteins and more fiber, you will feel better and have more energy. It may take time, but you can achieve permanent weight loss and outsmart the get fat fast conspiracy.
