Pump Up Heart Health with Aerobics

Aerobic exercise can be defined as any activity that increases your breathing and heart rate for a period of time. Your heart and lungs are like your muscles; you can strengthen them by making them work. An aerobic regimen is a great way to increase lung capacity and strengthen your heart, but it can also help you lose weight, keep bones and joints healthy, and flood your system with endorphins, those helpful brain chemicals that act as nature's pain killers.

Practically anyone can start an aerobic fitness routine, because your feet and body only have to work aerobicshard enough to increase your heart rate. For very sedentary people, that could be a leisurely walk through the neighborhood, while for others it could require brisk jogging or laps in the pool. Forget the fancy track suits and leotards; depending on your fitness level, an aerobic exercise plan could include exercising your feet with walking, running and cycling, or swimming, tennis, golf, gardening, painting, dance lessons, or hiking.

As with any fitness regimen, start slowly and build up your activity level until you reach a good balance for your body. How do you know if you're overdoing it? Well, your heart should be pumping and your breathing should be harder during exercise, but if you're gasping for air and can't carry on a conversation while you work out, you should probably slow your feet down a little. And of course, check with your doctor before starting any exercise plan

Whatever your weight-loss or fitness goals, aerobic exercise is a valuable addition to your weekly routine.
