Do You Really Need an Appetite Suppressant?Whether you hope to lose 10 pounds or 50, it's natural to want a quick and painless way to reclaim your thin, healthy self. Every day you're bombarded by advertisements and infomercials about the newest drug or diet pill that will solve all your weight loss problems instantly. But the cold, hard truth is that even if an appetite suppressant or diet pill helps you lose a few pounds right now, it won't help you keep the weight off and maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet and exercise regimen. No appetite suppressant is meant to be taken forever; sooner or later, it still just comes down to you and your desire to stay thin. And some appetite suppressants can actually damage your body instead of helping it. Too many diet pills have come out as the hot new drug, only to later be the target of class-action lawsuits by innocent citizens with damaged heart valves and chronic liver problems. Other problems with appetite suppressants, whether over-the-counter or prescription formulas, can include negative interaction with other medications, heart complications, and adverse effects during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Even herbal formulas, often containing ephedra (also known as ma huang), can cause side effects such as anxiety, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, insomnia, seizures, and heart attacks. If you really want to lose weight and keep it off, the best way is the old-fashioned way: eat better and exercise more. |
