While not an instant weight loss solution, aromatherapy can, when used in conjunction with other techniques, help you get the trimmer figure you desire. Smell is one of our most powerful senses. A certain scent can arouse strong emotions and vivid memories. The effect that scents can have on your mood is why aromatherapy can help you lose weight. Part of any successful diet is having the right frame of mind.

You've probably heard a million times that burning more calories than you consume is the aromatherapykey to weight loss and that exercising is the best way to do it. If you are need of an energy boost to get yourself off the couch and on the treadmill, try an essential oil with energizing properties: orange, grapefruit, rosemary, lemon or peppermint. Try wearing a vanilla-scented perfume so you can benefit from its properties all day long.

Another way to use scents in your weight loss plan is to help overcome emotional eating. When we're sad, stressed out, or having a bad day, it's tempting to turn to a chocolate brownie or big bowl of ice cream to feel better. One way to kick start your diet is to improve your mood. That's where scent therapy comes in. Here are some essential oils whose scents can help you de-stress:

  • Jasmine
  • Ylang ylang
  • Lavender
  • Sandalwood
  • Rose
  • Roman chamomile

Now that you know why your nose can aid in weight loss, you need to know how to implement it. Candles are an obvious starting place. Some of the more popular scents, like lavender, will be available virtually anywhere you can buy candles. Even plug-in air fresheners come in some aroma therapy varieties. If you want to carry the scent with you throughout the day, you can put a few drops of oil on a handkerchief. After a long day at work, enjoy a hot bath scented with your favorite oil. Go to bed with a peaceful feeling by placing a few drops of oils on your pillow.
