Asian Ginseng: The Properties of Yang

The root of Asian Ginseng, traditionally grown in China and parts of Korea, has been used as a health remedy for thousands of years. Along with ginseng grown in North America, it is used to treat the immune system and increase energy.

Herbal practitioners say that it's the chemicals, or ginsenosides, found in the root that can treat blood pressure, lower sugar in the blood, fight fatigue, and prevent headaches. While it hasn't been proven to substantially aid in weight loss, Asian Ginseng's overall benefits in terms of well-being and energy may make it easier to stick to your diet and exercise plan.

Because Asian Ginseng has about half the ginsenosides in its root compared to North asian ginsengAmerican Ginseng, it is considered to have the properties of "yang," which are warm. Most experts say this means that Asian Ginseng shouldn't be taken as a long-term remedy. The North American type is considered "yin" and can be taken long-term.

You can buy Asian Ginseng as a whole root, or in powdered or in capsule form. To ensure the best quality, you'll want to buy the whole root whenever possible. Some powders aren't pure, and are mixed with other herbs.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), among other organizations, is currently studying the properties of Ginseng to see if the root holds up to the fantastic claims of people who use it religiously.
