No Bread Allowed: Atkins Low Carb

There are actually several varieties of low carb diets, but none is more popular, or more well known, than the Atkins low carb diet. The Atkins low carb diet is somewhat controversial. While it has worked for many individuals to lose weight, there is argument from other nutritionists that though this diet may lose weight, it could also be unhealthy in the long term to any individual on it.

The Atkins low carb diet is based around the same theory as virtually all the low carb diets: that protein helps build the muscles (which burn far more calories than fat) as well as requiring more calories to burn and process. On the other end, they believe carbs and sugars from carbs are too easily translated into calories and then to fat. Thus, increasing proteins and eliminating carbs results in weight loss.

The Atkins low carb diet claims that the eating change will actually work to switch your body from a carbohydrate-burning metabolism to a primarily fat-burning metabolism.

Atkins is highly critical of sugar

Atkins is also highly critical of sugar and recommends eliminating it from your diet. Instead of carbs and sugar, Atkins eaters are allowed plenty of fat and protein. The system specifically recommends animal proteins and that vegetarians and vegans really Atkins, the inventor of the dietwon't be able to use this diet because of their eating restrictions.

While many of these high protein diets such as the Atkins low carb have been effective in promoting weight loss, some studies have linked them to health problems such as osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, and renal disease. These diets tend to be high is saturated fats and cholesterol, while low in fiber and some necessary vitamins.

While the Atkins low carb diet may be effective in losing weight, keep in mind that the whole reason for losing weight is health, and you need to be careful how you go about losing weight. Also, some people have claimed that after going off the diet even small amounts of increased carbs gained all the weight back. Weigh the risk versus the reward and make your decision from there.
