Choosing The Best Diet Plan

When you look at the incredible array of diets available on the market today, trying to pick the best diet plan can be a daunting task. Almost every single one of them promises instant or at least quick results, and some promise success without modifying your eating habits or exercising.

Your first weapon in choosing the best plan is something you hopefully carry with you every day: your common sense. If one of these "miracle" plans honestly worked, doesn't it stand to reason it would stay on the market for years and years? Instead, the miracle plans come and go faster than the changing of the seasons. One month's miracle ingredient gives way to the next month's miracle drug.

There are four basic areas that need to be addressed in any diet plan, and before you decide on one, make sure it covers all of these:

  • Food
  • Exercise
  • Long-term planning
  • Support

Any plan that doesn't address those four areas is not complete, and is most likely doomed to fail.

Beware any diet plan that requires elimination of an entire food group, or gross overuse of one. The human body is an incredibly complex machine, and requires a full variety of foods in order to function at its optimum.

Any exercise program undertaken as part of a diet should only be commenced after consultation with a medical professional. Until you know your capabilities and any underlying health problems that might affect your ability to exercise, you should stay out of the gym and off the running track.

One of the oldest plans around, Weight Watchers, has endured because it does a good job of addressing all four of those areas. The meetings provide the support, the "Lifetime" membership program is constructed for long-term success, and there is a whole library of cookbooks printed under the Weight Watchers imprint. Members are consistently encouraged to exercise, and workout plans are provided to members regularly.

However, Weight Watchers is not for everyone, and certainly wouldn't fit the bill as the best diet plan for all. It is used only as an example of a good choice. There are plenty of other options out there. A great research resource is the Internet, where thousands of discussion forums concerning diets can be found. Avoid ones that are sponsored by specific plans, instead seeking out independent ones where freer discussion can be found.

In the end, the success of any diet is most dependent on your own commitment, and you are the best judge of that.
