Blueberries Prevent Memory Loss And Improve Coordination

Do you write off your memory and coordination loss as simply part of the normal aging and think there is nothing you can do about it? Well, think again.

Having a delicious serving of plump blueberries can improve your memory and coordination. In fact, a breakthrough study by Tuffts University researchers and the USDA found blueberry extract can actually improve short-term memory and coordination in rats.

What the research found

Published in the Sept. 15 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, the researchers fed rats a diet high in blueberry extract along with extracts of other berries, such as strawberries. The rats in that group improved their short-term memories.

Previously, Tuffts researchers published findings that eating the equivalent of a cup of blueberries a day improved coordination in aging rats. They also showed that blueberries, when compared to other fruits and vegetables, contained the highest number of antioxidants. Antioxidants are important free-radical fighters. Excess free radicals in the body have been known to cause the formation of cancer tumors.

Lose weight the delicious way

In addition, berries have little effect on blood sugar as well as being low in calories, so blueberrythey are good fruits for diabetics as well as those that want to lose weight.

Because blueberries are delicious, it is not difficult to include them in your diet. Toss a handful into the blender along with some milk, soymilk or juice for a delicious smoothie. Try a blueberry muffin or blueberry pancakes for breakfast, or blend them with plain yogurt for a sweet treat.

If you find the fresh berries to be too expensive, eat the frozen berries. They are just as good for you, but you can get them for much less money. Compared to drugs and supplements, blueberries are a real bargain any way you eat them and they can help you lose weight. Blueberries are high in fiber and people who eat more fiber tend to snack less on junk food. Instead of grabbing a candy bar, fill up on blueberries.
