Is it Accurate? Bmi and Ideal WeightThe concepts of bmi (body mass index) and ideal weight are two long accepted pillars that are coming under fire more often than ever before. Traditionally a person's bmi was the way by which they could measure how overweight they were-and thus have some idea of what kind of health risks the person might be facing. Ideal weight goes hand in hand with bmi, as giving a person's bmi would allow a person to predict the weight range of that person and vice versa. These ideas of bmi and ideal weight are coming under fire more often
for various reasons. While for some individuals these numbers may be fairly accurate, many other people are claiming that those numbers don't take enough factors into consideration. Muscle weighs more than fat, so individuals who body build, are athletes, or even just exercise regularly or semi-regularly may find that despite having a flat tummy, good tone, and a healthy body fat percentage, that they are 10, 20, or even 40 pounds over their Bmi and ideal weight also fail to take in certain genetic factors, such as body frame. While the phrase "big boned" or "large framed" have long been used as jokes pointed at obese individuals insisting they weren't, but some people are actually bigger than others because of a large bone structure-which automatically needs a larger muscle frame to support the body and which also means that such a person's actual ideal weight might be 30 pounds more than what a chart says it is. Yet these charts are still used, even in the medical field. The best way to judge your weight is to eat healthy and exercise until you look and feel good. A body fat test is also an excellent way to determine where you actually stand-and these are far more accurate than the bmi and ideal weight charts. Remember to go for healthy, and your body will let you know when you're there. |
