Calciferol: What is Vitamin D2?

Calciferol is a specific name for the hormone better known as vitamin D2. The reason it is called calciferol is that it contributes to the body's ability to maintain a proper balance of calcium and phosphorus. Calciferol is also a more accurate reference since it is technically not a true vitamin. Human skin is actually capable of creating its own calciferol by simply being out in the sun in ultraviolet light for even a short amount of time. Since theFish contains Calciferol body does not need a large amount of this "vitamin," even the small amounts that can be found in liver, eggs, cereal, and fish is more than enough for the body's most basic needs.

Calciferol comes most often in supplement form. While there are not any obvious benefits to supplementing this hormone (at least not from a weigh loss perspective) there are several functions that having calciferol can aid, which in turn allows most of the body to run more smoothly. The most commonly mentioned benefits, or situations in which taking a calciferol supplement may help include:

  • The benefit of assuring the healthy metabolism of calcium and phosphorus (which is, after all, the hormone's original function)
  • Maximizing the healthy absorbing of calcium and phosphorous in both the bones, as well as the intestines and other parts of the body
  • To help treat rickets, and other similar afflictions
  • To help treat calcium deficiencies, such as from osteoporosis in the elderly
  • To function as a quality nutritional addition to foods

While calciferol is not going to have the same effects as say flax seeds or healthy diets, it may be of large use to individuals who have indoor jobs, or naturally don't like dairy products and therefore need to be able to digest and keep the dairy they do bring into their system. For these people a calciferol supplement may be just what the doctor ordered!
