Childhood Obesity: America's Growing EpidemicA Massachusetts study found that today's children under the age of six are 59% more likely to be obese than children 20 years ago. This statistic is just one of the depressing facts that make it clear that America is in the midst of an obesity epidemic, and that it's affecting our youngest citizens. Childhood obesity can be a result of heredity or genetics, as well as nutritional and psychological factors. Some studies have shown that children of obese mothers are more likely to become obese themselves, even at a young age. The eating habits of most American families today are based on a large amount of fast food, pre-packaged meals containing lots of preservatives, and plenty of sweets. Fresh vegetables and healthy, balanced meals have taken a back seat in many cases to convenience and quick preparation. When it comes to your child's weight, prevention is easier than a cure. You should teach your child about proper nutrition, what it feels like to be satisfied, the dangers of constant snacking, and the value of an active lifestyle. Of course, practicing what you preach will benefit everyone, including your own health. Whether you want to help your child avoid obesity or actually tackle an existing weight problem, it is best to work together as a family. Make a commitment to healthy eating and increasing activity levels together, rather than focusing on the child's need to lose weight. Learning about (and adopting) a healthy lifestyle can be a fun adventure for everyone, and will lead to a better quality of life. |
