Dieting and Chocolate - Do They Mix?

Chocolate is one of those sinfully delicious treats that most of us feel guilty about indulging in. The truth is, occasionally having a bit of chocolate isn't necessarily bad for you - the key is moderation. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, which is higher in cocoa powder content, actually contains antioxidants which can be good for you.

The down side of chocolate is that along with the antioxidants you are also getting a hefty portion of fats from the cocoa butter and lots of sugar. It is a simple carbohydrate that will spike your blood sugar briefly, and then allow it to drop, possibly leaving you hungrier than you were before.

If you must have chocolate while on a diet, consider these steps to keep yourself in check:

  • Low-carb chocolates such as Ross Chocolates. These Belgium chocolates are chocololatesugar free and can curb your cravings without the usual sugar rush.
  • Don't eat an entire candy bar. Instead, buy a bag of mini chocolates or small chocolate kisses, and then limit yourself to one each evening as a treat after a meal.
  • Look for meal substitutes that are chocolate flavored, such as Slim-Fast shakes. These can replace a full lunch when you're on the go, provide vitamins and minerals, and give you the satisfaction of chocolate all at the same time.

If you practice moderation and good sense, you can diet and still indulge your sweet tooth on occasion.
