The Perks of Coffee

The key to all good things in life is moderation. This rings true for java as well. We all know that we should drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Coffee is considered a diuretic which means it can cause dehydration. Recent studies have shown that coffee's diuretic affects are minimal and that the occasional cup may even be counted toward one of your glasses of water. The main reason people drink it is for the caffeine. Studies show that drinking 1/2 cup of coffee every few hours throughout the morning will help ward off fatigue, keep your energy level high and boost productivity. Research has also shown that your cup of joy may help prevent gallstones and reduce the risk of Parkinson's disease.

Black Coffee Is In!

Coffee drinkers, especially those who drink it black, may have an added bonus of the thermogenic affect. The caffeine can increase your metabolism by stimulating your coffee cupnervous system. The downside is that your body can eventually adapt to this and the thermogenic effect can fade. However, if you drink it without consuming carbohydrates, the caffeine will help facilitate the burning of body fat by pulling fatty acids out of the fat cells. If you drink coffee while eating carbohydrates the insulin produced in your body may override the fat burning effects of the caffeine. To get the best use for weight loss you should drink it black, drink it on an empty stomach and drink it in moderation.

A Cup of a Different Color

Many coffee drinkers, however, love it with cream, sugar, milk, caramel, chocolate and a multitude of other extras. This will unfortunately cause the calories to add up and outweigh some of the benefits. With coffee now available around every corner, people are drinking more throughout their day. Too much caffeine can cause insomnia, jitters, and irritability. As stated above, moderation is the key to all good things. Caffeine can be a helpful tool when trying to lose weight if it is consumed appropriately. It cannot replace a glass of water; however, it is a better choice than a sugar calorie filled soft drink. So have your morning brew, but don't forget to eat some veggies and go for a walk.
