Desserts can be tasty and healthy

Desserts can not only be low in fat and calories while remaining tasty, but they can also have nutritional benefits. All it takes is a little creativity in the kitchen and you can create cookies, cakes and other desserts that won't violate your diet plans.

When researching dessert recipes keep your eye out for unhealthy ingredients. For cookies especially, a main culprit is butter and all the fat it brings to a dessert. You can try cutting the amount of butter required in half and this usually won't harm the final product. Many recipes can easily be altered to make them more healthy by using simple dessertsubstitutes. Replace butter with margarine, use cocoa instead of chocolate or replace chocolate chips altogether with nuts or raisins. Also, sugar can be replaced with a sugar substitute such as Splenda to cut out a lot of calories.

Remember, avoid desserts recipes that contain many unhealthy ingredients and look for those that include healthy ingredients such as fruits or nuts. Here is an example of a dessert recipe that is not only healthy, but also tasty - a stuffed baked apple. It is fat-free, low in calories and contains ingredients that provide vitamins, fiber and iron.

  • Core an apple and peel about halfway down
  • Combine the following ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon of raisins
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • ˝ teaspoon of honey
  • a dash of cinnamon
  • Stuff the apple with these ingredients and cover with foil
  • Place the apple in an oven-proof custard cup and fill the bottom of the cup with 1 teaspoon of water
  • Bake for 35-45 minutes at 350 degrees F
  • Alternatively, cover with plastic wrap and cook the apple for 2 minutes on high in the microwave. Continue to cook in one minute increments until the apple is soft.

By using substitutions in your dessert recipes or finding recipes that use healthy ingredients, you can still enjoy tasty results without harming your diet or weight loss plan.
