Brushing Up on Diet and Health

We all need to eat, but with so many different types of food out there, we have the potential for making some not-so-smart diet choices. It's easy to pick up a pizza or swing by the drive-through, but are those meals really nourishing your body and giving you energy?

If you want to lose weight, it can be even more difficult to figure out which diet to choose. The multitude of fad and extreme diets can be overwhelming, leaving even the most knowledgeable person wondering what step to take.

Whether you just want to maintain your good health, or lose pounds and gain energy, here are a few staples to include in your diet:

  • Fruits and veggies - These are nature's perfect foods for our bodies. Packed diet end your healthwith valuable vitamins, minerals, fiber, phytochemicals and antioxidants, they are quickly processed in the body. A healthy diet should include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Grains and legumes - While we may not live by bread alone, whole grains and legumes (beans, lentils, nuts, etc.) offer wholesome protein and other vitamins. They're filling and can be used in many different ways, too.
  • Meat - Another great source of protein, meats like chicken, fish, pork and beef can be part of healthy diet. It can be high in animal fats and cholesterol, so watch your portion sizes and go for the leanest cuts of meat.
  • Dairy - Milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products can provide calcium and protein for growing bodies. Because of the fat and cholesterol content in many of these products, they also fall under the "watch your portions" category.

As with most things in life, a good balance is the key in your diet. Make sure to eat a wide variety of foods with a focus on fresh and lean products.
