Learn to avoid the dangers of diet cycling

Diet cycling, also referred to as yo-yo dieting, is an ineffective means of achieving weight loss and will have harmful effects upon your health. This happens when you diet, lose weight and then discontinue the diet only to see all the weight that you worked so hard to get rid of return. Those that indulge in diet cycling go through this series repeatedly. Gaining back the weight you initially lost is unhealthy for a number of reasons. For example, diet cycling can cause your muscle to fat ratio to decrease, your immune system to weaken and your metabolism to lower.

The best step to avoid diet cycling is to make a smart choice for a diet plan in the first place. In order for an eating plan to work best, it needs to be specific to your body type and the particular problems you are combating. Those that suffer from diet cycling often make the unhealthy and extreme diet choices of fasting, skipping meals or very low calorie intake. Keeping realistic diet expectations will ensure a higher success rate.

The following pointers will help you stick to a diet and avoid diet cycling:

  • Understand that weight loss will not be immediate
  • Aim for steady and moderate weight loss - one to two pounds per week is a healthy rate
  • Decrease your calorie intake slowly - don't make a sudden drop
  • Pair your diet with an exercise plan
  • Consider if your diet plan is something you can picture yourself doing for as long as a year

Picking an appropriate diet plan and following it in a healthy way will allow you to achieve long-term weight loss. If you embark on a diet that is too extreme or unrealistic, you may face the additional problems of depression or tiredness, making it difficult to continue with your diet plan. Make smart choices so that you can avoid the harmful effects of diet cycling.
