Get diet programs you can use in choosing the best weight loss programs inside this article.Jenny Craig, Dexatrim, Weight Watchers, Herbalife, South Beach, Atkins-so many diet programs for losing weight, how can you tell who's the best? Though in theory they are all quite similar, methods, costs, and results play a big part of the decision-making process. Having the right diet information can help you choose an appropriate program as well as save you time and money. Though the ultimate goal is generally successful weight loss, there are other things to consider when considering a program. Check out the pros and cons of some of the popular programs. Fee Based Programs - Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers and those programs who operate like them, generally offer a free consultation prior to actually signing up. There are also usually weekly consultations to monitor progress and discuss modifying your weight Where these two programs differ is in their methods of teaching members how to eat and the costs that are involved in order to participate. Weight Watchers charges for their meetings (approx $12 per meeting) and any other additional products that the member chooses to purchase. Weight Watchers focuses on teaching members portion control and preaches the use of assessing points to certain foods. They offer recipes that help the member to learn the calorie content of the foods they use. Pre-packaged meals are available in most grocery stores, but not required to be on the plan. The idea is to teach members how prepare their own food being conscious of the calories involved. Jenny Craig charges for membership also (approx $36 for a six week plan), however their program relies on the additional purchase of pre-packaged meals which are sold to the member in portions that are meant to meet the agreed on caloric intake. While there is a wide selection, the average cost per meal ranges from about $5-$14, with meals purchased usually on a biweekly basis. Though both of these programs produce impressive results, Weight Watchers edges past Jenny Craig because it concentrates on independence and teaching a lifestyle of good eating. Books and Independent Online Plans - The Atkins Diet and South Beach Diet are your general independent plans. They provide book guidance and online support, and operate without the weekly meetings. Weigh-ins are recorded online and basically provide wiggle room for those who are low on discipline. Both of these diets involve limiting or omitting certain foods. Atkins promotes a diet that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates, theorizing that since the body burns both carbohydrates and fats, the limited amount of available carbohydrates will cause more burning of fat. On the other hand, South Beach indicates that it is not a low carb, low fat diet, but rather a method to learning how to eat a balanced diet. It does however seem similar to Atkins in that it requires the omission of most carbohydrates and a high protein content for the first two weeks. Following this two-week period these foods are reintroduced into the diet. These methods work well for someone who prefers to lose weight independently and doesn't want to have a separate grocery list from the rest of their household. These programs also produce results however there is often a certain yo-yo effect involved since many people return to eating the previously eliminated foods. Pills and Shakes - Herbalife, SlimFast, Dexatrim and those like them rely on the daily consumption of a mixture of pills and liquid drinks. These programs use a combination of appetite suppressants, diuretics, and protein supplements to control hunger and elimination to produce weight loss results. Though they vary in cost, these methods require extreme dedication as a person must remember to take all the pills, usually a specific period of time prior to eating, and shakes must be made to serve as breakfast and lunch. This can often be problematic for someone who is always on the run, or who tends to be somewhat forgetful. Also at issue, is the fact that some pills have adverse effects when consumed with ingredients such as caffeine. It is important to read the directions carefully when taking a product that involves pills. Results with these programs vary and depend heavily upon the dedication of the person involved. They tend to also have a yo-yo effect since there is usually the involvement of appetite suppressants. Once those are stopped old eating habits are likely to resurface. Understanding a program before starting it is critical to your success in that particular program. You must gauge all the relevant factors. How much will it cost? What will I learn? Will I lose the weight and keep it off? Obtaining detailed and accurate diet information assists you in making an intelligent decision for a plan that fits your needs, schedule and budget. |
