Why Poor Digestion May Be Keeping You Fat

Many people never spend another minute thinking about their digestive systems after they complete a required anatomy and physiology or biology class in school. They never think about their digestive system until a doctor diagnoses them with colon cancer, leaky gut syndrome, a spastic colon or IBS with constipation.

Proper digestion is important because without it, your body holds onto food, which eventually becomes encrusted on your colon walls.

The beauty of peristalsis

Just as the ocean moves sand and debris along the shoreline, a person's body has its own way of moving food and toxins through his or her digestive system.

Peristalsis works like an ocean wave moving food through the muscles of the esophagus, intestine and stomach.

In an effort to lose weight, some people choose to have a colonic or colon hydrotherapy performed to release built-up feces in their colon.

After a colonic, many people lose 2 to 5 pounds. The procedure, which involves warm water flowing into the entire length of the colon, can improve a person's natural peristalsis to prevent health problems.

Human digestion begins with the mouth and salivary glands. It also involves the stomach, small and large intestines, colon, liver, pancreas and gallbladder.

As humans we need a digestive system that can break down foods into smaller molecules that can be assimilated by the body.

Chew your food

The enzymes in your saliva break down food into sugars, amino acids and fatty acids so they can reach the organs in your body that need energy.

Because digestion starts with the digestive enzymes in your mouth, which break down food, it's important to thoroughly chew your foods. Just that one change alone can lead to weight loss over the course of a year.

You may also want to take digestive enzymes, either found naturally or with supplementation, to help you digest food.

If you are feeling constipated, increase your fiber intake, drink more water and avoid sugary foods that can take a toll on your body's ability to digest food. Also, take an occasional break from eating dairy and meats so your digestive system has a time to recoup.
