EPA: For a Better Body

EPA is short for Eicosapentaenoic Acid, and is a hormone that interacts well with Omega-3 fatty acids (in layman's terms: "good fat") in the human body to offer positive health benefits. These are the fats most commonly found in fish, walnuts, flax seed, and olive oil. EPA interacts with the good fat and can help the human body more effectively and efficiently keep blood pressure at a healthy level, prevent blood clots, and fight against inflammation. There are some studies that suggest these proteins and fats may go so far as to help mood swings and depression, though studies are still being done to determine to what extent this is true.

Many health stores sell EPA supplements in pill form. These supplements boost the amount of EPA in the body, which in theory should also make all the good fats and amino acids in the body work to maximum capacity. The most promising aspect of EPA is its potential effects that are beneficial for the heart. While there does not appear to be a direct correlation between EPA and weight loss, the health benefits EPA offers to the human body are along the lines of the healthy benefits that come with weight loss.

The main association EPA could have with weight loss is that there are certain types of amino acids that EPA interacts with that help to encourage muscle growth. Muscle burns a lot more calories than fat, even when at rest, and thus is EPA did encourage additional fast muscle growth, then those extra muscles would burn more calories, possibly making weight loss occur more quickly.

For now the direct link between the two just has not been established yet, though there are many health benefits that EPA has been show to have. The one caveat is that EPA should not be taken if you are on any type of medicine for blood pressure or your heart. Always consult a doctor first-after all, health is the most important thing.
