Two basic types of exercise equipment and training.

First, let's discuss the kinds of training. There are two of them - a cardiovascular (or cardio for short) and strength. Cardiovascular training is used to increase your heart health and burn your fat thanks to the increased heart rate. Strength training, on the other hand, concentrates on increasing the mass of your muscles.

Depending on the type of training you decide to choose, you will need to spend more time on different exercise equipment. While, of course, strength training helps burn fat too and cardio increases your muscle mass, they aren't the same and so the exercise equipment you will need will be different.

The most common cardiovascular training equipment includes:fitness gear

The strength training, on the other hand, uses cardio equipment only for a warm-up and generally relies on other type of training equipment, for example:

  • medicine balls
  • free weights
  • weight machines
  • chin-up bars
  • crunch machines

and many, many more.

How to use this exercise equipment properly - a few tips.

  • First of all, listen to your instructor if you have one, or follow the book (if you train only at home). Especially, do not increase the weights you train with unless you are 100% sure you can do that. Remember that it is about making you stronger, not making you cripple.
  • Use all kinds of equipment available in order to train all the muscles. That is why many people prefer free weights to the machines - weightlifting requires all your muscles to work at the same time.
  • If you follow cardiovascular training, use different kinds of cardio training machines to maximize the effects. Use the strength exercise equipment only as an add-on and when you are sure that you doctor permits it.
  • If you are all for strength training, start from 10 to 20 minutes warm-up on one of cardiovascular machines before starting "real" exercises. It will let your body to accommodate for the increased effort and minimize chances of contusion.
