Exercise Videos: Bring The Gym Home!

Joining a gym can be a daunting proposition for many who are seeking to lose weight. The thought of putting on workout togs and actually parading around in front of other people, not to mention sweating and puffing over exercise equipment, is enough to keep many on the couch.

Then there's the expense. Even a basic gym membership can cost $100 a month, and expect to open your checkbook even wider if you want to take advantage of a personal trainer or other services.

This explains the huge market for exercise videos. From Richard Simmons to Billy Blanks, personal trainers and fitness gurus from all angles of the fitness spectrum have put together their own audiovisual fitness aids for people of every ability level. They are generally fairly affordable and, best of all, you don't have to wear Spandex in front of anyone to use them. You'll have your own home gym!

There are a few things to keep in mind, though, before you head to the store and start filling a basket.

  • Type of exercise: What kind of exercise do you enjoy? Are traditional aerobics your style, or do you prefer something more like martial arts, like Tae Bo or Krav Maga? Can your living-room floor take the punishment of you jumping up and down on it, or should you pick something ground-based?
  • Your capacities: How much exercise are you capable of? Everyone wants to believe they can handle the most grueling workouts, but before you buy is the time to be realistic and acknowledge your physical limits. You might want to start with something low-impact, like Tai Chi, and work up from there.
  • Equipment: Some programs require the purchase of other equipment. Are you prepared for the extra investment? Will you have storage space for whatever's required? I've got a friend who bought a huge exercise ball that now orbits through her house, taking up half a room wherever it lands.
  • Support: Many programs offer online support groups, and some even allow you to get in touch with the star or his or her assistants. If this is something appealing to you, then be sure to pick a program that offers that option.

Whatever your choice, it's only going to work well if you are committed to it. All the exercise videos in the world won't do you a bit of good if they sit in their cases in the entertainment center.
