Looking For A Free High Fiber Diet Meal Plan?

These days, especially with the Baby Boomers hitting their later years, fiber is a hot topic, and it's a rare person who hasn't gone in search of a free high fiber diet meal plan at one time or another. Most fiber diets come in book form, and the last time I checked, books aren't free.

However, eating a gratis high fiber diet really isn't all that complicated, especially once you know which foods to eat, how much and how often.

But first, why do you need fiber in your diet?

Dietary fiber has a multitude of benefits for the body, and more are being discovered every day. High fiber intake has been linked to lowered cholesterol, improved cardiac function and better digestive health, among a host of others. By far the most prominent benefit is digestive health. Eat your fiber every day, and your problems with constipation and other bowel upsets will be history.

If you're in search of dietary fiber, here are the foods to find:

Breads, cereals and other grain products: Look for whole grain products as much as you can. There are more and more things such as cereal made with whole grains, as the public consciousness of fiber's importance increases.

  • Fruits and vegetables: Any root vegetable, cabbage relative (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc.), peas, spinach and squash will give you plenty of fiber. Skin fruits, such as apples, berries, peaches, pears and mangoes are good sources, with perhaps the best source being the banana.
  • Nuts and beans: Dried beans, almonds, chestnuts, sunflower seeds and even peanut butter are good fiber sources.

It's important to note that fiber is almost indestructible. Cooking a vegetable or a fruit does not destroy its fiber content. However, the worst mistake you can make is to remove the skins from fruits and vegetables. The skins are where a tremendous portion of the fiber content resides. Remove it, and you're throwing away all their benefits.

If you get several servings of fiber a day, you should not need a fiber supplement. However, should you want to take one, or should your other dietary needs not allow you to eat enough fiber, look for a supplement that can be mixed into liquid, as several studies indicate the body does a better job of absorbing fiber taken in this form.
