In Search Of The Greatest Weight Loss Pills
The search for the greatest weight loss pills can leave the searcher feeling like he or she is on safari, hacking through a dense jungle in search of the elusive quarry. At every turn, there are thickets of health claims and pitfalls of side effects that can leave the unwary explorer well off the map and completely lost.
In this article, we'll take a look at some of the most popular diet pills, their claims and side effects.
- Xenical: This is a prescription diet pill. It is a lipase inhibitor, often called a "fat blocker," that prevents a certain amount of fat consumed from being absorbed. It is effective, but the side effects can be
unpleasant. These include diarrhea, frequent urges to go to the bathroom, cramping and oily spotting.
- Phentermine: This is another prescription-based pill, and it has similar Internet availability to Xenical. However, a lot of what is sold on the Internet is not Phentermine at all, but herbal supplements sold under that name. The drug acts as an appetite suppressant and central nervous system stimulant, and has been proven effective. The side effects include dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability and upset stomach, but usually dissipate after continued use.
- Kava: Also sold as kava-kava, this supplement has been banned in Canada and many other countries, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has released a number of warnings about the product. Kava has a relaxant effect, and is sold as a sleep aid, stress reducer and diet aid. Its side effects are reported to be hypertension, shortness of breath, visual impairment and liver damage. Over 100 people worldwide have suffered severe liver damage linked to products containing kava.
- Meridia: This is an appetite suppressant drug, available by prescription, that works by acting on serotonin and norepinephrine, affecting mood and appetite. It is intended to be used as part of a comprehensive diet plan, and has no physical weight loss effects by itself. Headaches, dry mouth and insomnia have been identified as side effects.
With the exception of kava, these drugs are effective in their own ways and the side effects, while possibly unpleasant, are not as dangerous as remaining overweight is over the long term. If you are convinced that your only path to weight loss success is through pharmaceutical help, consult with your doctor to figure out which drug is right for you.
