Gum Disease: Losing Weight Can Mean Whiter Smile

Experts have been saying for decades that sugar causes tooth decay and drinking soda pop can be bad not only for your weight, but also for your teeth. Scientists now believe obesity is a major predictor of gum disease. Experts with the University of Buffalo found it did not matter how old a person was or whether they smoked. A person's risk for periodontal disease is greater if they have a high level of insulin resistance, which is a problem for people with diabetes.

More than 75 percent of Americans have gum disease. Experts blame it on a diet high in refined carbohydrates and processed foods.

Changing one's diet and seeing a dental hygienist who can remove built up plague can prevent gum disease, which is an inflammation of the gums.

Lose weight instead of your gorgeous smile

Experts say people who had the highest insulin resistance tended to have more lost teeth. Also, those with a high body mass index tend to produce more cytokines which are proteins associated with periodontal problems. Sadly, people with infected gums are at risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and kidney problems. They are also more likely to die from health complications than people without gingivitis.
