Health risks and the cabbage soup diet-what you need to know before you go on the week-long cabbage fest

The cabbage soup diet is a 7-day diet plan that, as the name suggests, mainly involves eating lots and lots of cabbage soup. Each day of the diet you can eat as much cabbage soup as you want, and you can have one or two other foods specified for that particular day. Because it's a quick way to drop a few pounds, the diet has taken off in popularity. But you should know that many health risks and the cabbage soup diet go hand-in-hand.

During the seven days you're on the diet, you're likely to feel dizzy and suffer from a loss of concentration. These symptoms are caused by the lack of balanced nutrition. The absence of certain nutrients is another common warning of health risks and the cabbage soup diet. Among the nutrients you'll be missing when on the diet are protein, calcium, and fiber. You'll also be missing several vitamins and minerals. This kind of imbalance in your diet can always be damaging to your health, but the risks are even greater when people try to stay on the diet for more than 7 days.

On the other hand, the cabbage soup diet can encourage over consumption of other types of foods. The soup is very high in sodium. Additionally, the day that allows you to eat beef encourages you to eat way more than is healthy-about 1.5 pounds of beef in one day! Your body simply isn't use to processing such a large quantity of meat in one day.

Also, the cabbage soup diet is likely to lead to yo-yo dieting. On the diet, you'll mainly be losing water weight, which will come right back when you go off the diet. As a side note, the loss of all that water can lead to dehydration. Extreme fluctuations in weight are unhealthy. Your body is confused, and, in the long run, you'll probably have an even harder time losing weight because your body will have trained itself to store extra fat as a means of self-protection. The temporary nature of the weight loss is what ends up leading to another relationship between health risks and the cabbage soup diet. You'll likely go from starving yourself to over-eating because you'll have felt so deprived for the whole week.
