Is Ideal Body Weight A Realistic Goal?

Many weight loss programs and diet doctors promise to do two things: help you find your ideal body weight and help you attain it. However, it's only in very rare cases that you will ever actually meet the person making this promise.

Why is that a problem? Certainly getting yourself to the weight that is most appropriate for your age and height is a good thing, right?

Well, of course it is, as long as the number you're shooting for is truly the right weight for you, not for some hypothetical person who just happens to be as tall and as old as you. Think about it for a moment: How many people do you know who are your age and about the same height as you. Do they have the same body as you? You've got wide shoulders, do they? One of them has a beer gut. Do you? Chances are, no two of you have the same body type.

And therein lies the problem. Two 35-year-old men, both six feet tall, can both weigh theIdeal Body Weight same and yet look entirely different. Perhaps one of them works out a lot and thus has more muscle mass. Maybe one of them is genetically predisposed to have a disproportionate amount of body fat. I could go on and on, but you doubtless get the point by now.

It is possible to determine the best weight for you, but you should by all means not do so by using a book or by going to a large seminar or meeting. You need to consult with a doctor or at the very least a qualified fitness instructor who can measure you, check your body fat percentage and do all the other work necessary to help you come up with a number you can live with.

Of course, it is far more important for you to find a diet and exercise plan you can live with now. Your ideal weight, especially if you are morbidly obese, is far down the road yet. In fact, some doctors say it is impossible to determine an accurate target weight until the person doing so has lost a good portion of his or her excess weight, so true body type can be determined.
