Is Diet Coke bad for you? That depends on what you need.

Discussing the health effects of Diet Coke is difficult. That's not because of Coca-Cola Company influencing researchers or the hard-to-trace long term effects of Diet Coke, but because there is no such thing as a universal Diet Coke recipe. It is even sold under different names, depending on the country: Coca-Cola Light for non-English speaking countries and Diet coke in US, UK and Australia. The recipe changes depending on the country and time, making any generalizations difficult. This is especially important because of Aspartame, one of the Diet Coke sweeteners that is suspected of being dangerous.

What are the health benefits and dangers of drinking Diet Coke?

The first and most important benefit of drinking the Diet Coke is the low calorie intake. A single can of Diet Coke is worth only 4 calories, compared to 139 calories per can in case of the standard, non-diet Coke. While drinking three bottles of normal Coca-Cola a day can have a disastrous effect on any diet, it will become virtually harmless if we substitute Coca-Cola with Diet Coke.

However, according to some scientists, Diet Coke has some serious negative effects on the health, due to using aspartame as its sweetener. Aspartame is blamed of causing brain tumors, brain lesions and lymphoma if taken in large quantities (as is in case of Diet Coke), though the professional opinions are somewhat mixed on this matter. Besides, that problem would concern only those types of Diet Coke that use aspartame. No other Diet Coke sweetener (saccharine, sucralose or cyclamate) is suspected of posing any significant risk to the health.

Diet Coke is probably good for you, that's the fact. Even if aspartame can indeed cause any of the health problems above, you will need to drink five or six liters of Diet Coke a day for a long time in order to put yourself at any significant risk.
