Is laparoscopic weight loss surgery an alternative to "miracle pills"?

Laparoscopic weight loss surgery is not meant for everybody. Due to its cost and possible dangers related to this kind of surgery, it is recommended only for those obese people who meet the following conditions:

  • they are more than 50 kg overweight or twice their ideal weight - their BMI is more than 40, or more than 35 when additional health problems like diabetes or high blood pressure occur,
  • they have failed all traditional attempts of reducing weight for at least five years and they can prove it with medical records,
  • they fully understand and accept all risks tied to this type of surgical procedure as well as are ready to stay under observation for a prolonged period of time,
  • their health and psychological condition allows laparoscopic weight loss surgery.

The most popular type of laparoscopic weight loss surgery is sealing off the bigger part ofLaparoscopic weight loss surgery the stomach to decrease the amount of food we can eat together with rearranging the small intestine to reduce the absorption of calories. It is usually done by creating a little "pouch" from an upper part of stomach and adding a bypass at a segment of the small intestine. Using laparoscopy does not only decrease the possibility of wound-related problems and shortens the average stay in the hospital, but also speeds up the whole recovery process. There are usually five scars (four for all sharps needed and one for a camera), but they are much less visible than in case of the traditional surgery.

The whole operation is performed under the general anesthesia and lasts usually for no more than four hours. After that the patient must stay in a hospital for at least three to five days, depending on his overall condition.

For the first 12 weeks after the surgery, the patient must follow a special diet. After the laparoscopic weight loss surgery, you will never be able to return to your old eating habits - neither diet nor the amount of consumed food. You will also have to take vitamin supplements due to rearrangement of the small intestine.

Still, the effects are worth all those sacrifices. Your weight will decrease rapidly in the first few months after the operation and around one and a half years later you can expect even 75% weight loss.
