Legumes, such as leafy vegetables, are essential sources of vitamins and minerals. Legumes are also full of proteins and fiber while staying low in sugars and fats. As such, legumes are widely held to be nearly flawless foods. Legumes, however, are not the most popular food to eat, mostly because of the preparation that they require combined with the unexciting taste.

If you are trying to lose weight, then you probably know how important a health, well-rounded diet is to achieving your goal. Nearly every diet around lists legumes as a green-light food, meaning that they are okay to eat during every phase of the diet. One of the primary reasons that legumes are so popular among dieters is that they allow you to diet smart: you can still obtain essential nutrients while severely limiting your caloric intake and fat intake.

Legumes are also high in fiber and protein: the two elements that help to keep you satiated. Fiber will help to fill your stomach with complex minerals that take a while to break down while simultaneously regulating your intestinal tract. The proteins will help to ensure that your muscles receive the nutrients they need to stay limber and able while your blood cells are able to function are prime capacity.

Keep in mind, though, that while legumes are a very popular aspect of many successful diets, man cannot survive on legumes alone. No matter what diet you are engaged in, if it recommends legumes as a primary source of nutrition, you may want to take it into your own hands to diversify your options. Legumes provide many high-quality nutrients, but they do not supply them all. For the best approach to nutrition, make sure to incorporate dairy, fruits, meats and grains along with a healthy dose of the green stuff.
