A List Of Weight Loss Programs By Type

It was inevitable: As the numbers of diet programs out there passed into the thousands, any number of "list" Web sites would crop up to capitalize. The problem is, most of them just give you a list of names with links to the individual diet's site. Some purport to give diet reviews, but without knowing who the reviewer is, can you trust the review? Many of them give their "reviews" based upon how much the diet pays to advertise on their site.

A better idea is to break down the list by type. If you look at it from a distance, there are really only four basic types of weight loss programs:

Food-based: This includes programs like Nutri-System and Jenny Craig, which base their system around prepackaged meals that participants purchase either monthly or weekly from the program. There are also exercise recommendations, etc. The plans can be expensive if you break them down to a per-meal basis and compare that with the cost of doing your own grocery shopping. However, if you are the type who is prone to eating out five or six times a week because you hate to shop and cook, this could be a good choice. In some major cities, there are even personal chefs who, for a larger tab, will cook you restaurant-quality meals with a diet theme.

  • Exercise-based: This includes programs like Tae-Bo and the venerable Jazzercise. These are entirely exercise-based programs, and in fact don't really fit the term "diet" at all. For weight loss, these programs rely on exercise from mild to vigorous. If you already eat properly, but have trouble getting off the couch and working up a sweat, one of these would be a good choice. Be sure to consult with your doctor first!
  • Drug-based: Again, these really don't fit the mold of a traditional diet program. Drugs like Xenical and Meridia are prescribed to help an already existing diet plan succeed. Some fat-blocker drugs do come with their own food guidelines, but those are more for the purpose of avoiding unpleasant side effects than weight loss.
  • Comprehensive: This covers plans like Weight Watchers and South Beach, that combine food, exercise and lifestyle changes to give you a "total picture" diet. If you are new to weight loss, or want the personal support that the Weight Watchers meetings provide, this is an excellent choice. It is good to note that Weight Watchers is consistently rated one of the top, most-successful diets.

Whatever plan you choose, don't do so without consulting with your doctor!
