A liver cleansing diet can help you and your liver look and feel like a million bucks

The liver cleansing diet is supposed to both promote weight loss and cleanse the body. The most famous liver cleansing diet was created by an Australian doctor named Sandra Cabot who published a book called, unsurprisingly, The Liver Cleansing Diet. While Cabot's liver cleansing diet often results in weight loss and unquestionably promotes healthier eating, both Cabot and this detox diet have been criticized for the generalized blame placed on the liver for a multitude of ailments. Here is a list of just some of the many health problems Cabot claims are caused by poor liver health:

  • Allergies
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure

As you can see, these are common symptoms that could be triggered by any number of things. In fact, Cabot even blames the liver for bad breath and bad moods! Cabot's liver cleansing diet has also been criticized for a lack of scientific evidence in support of the claimed benefits.

That being said, a lot of people who use Cabot's liver cleansing diet have tremendous success. It's possible for an overloaded liver to be at least partially responsible for obesity. Cleansing your liver through diet and herbal supplements can, and has for some people, lead to weight loss. Besides weight loss, people who have tried some type of liver cleansing diets say they feel healthier, livelier, and even have an improved complexion.

The type of foods that you eat when on a liver cleansing diet are similar to the foods recommended for many other types of diets. Look for foods that are:

Take your vitamins. Each day, you should be eating foods that contain a lot of Vitamins C and E as well as zinc and selenium. And as you might expect, you should steer clear of processed foods and caffeine. You'll also have to stave off the temptations of fried foods, salty foods, soda, and white sugar.

It is sometimes recommended that you engage in a "light" fast for the first few days of liver cleansing diets. Drink lots and lots of water, eat fresh fruits and veggies, and go for salad as a meal. The fasting is supposed to give your liver a nice vacation from digestion.
