Are You Ready to Lose Weight Now?

Plenty of people say, "I've tried to lose weight, but diets never work for me," or "I just can't seem to stick with it, and I end up gaining weight instead of losing it." These kinds of comments are common excuses for people who claim they want to lose weight now, but keep putting it off until later.

If you aren't really ready to truly focus on losing weight, don't bother - if you don't have the right mindset, you are setting yourself up for diet failure before you even begin. Being ready to lose weight now rather than later involves having the right attitude and being prepared. Are you ready? Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • Am I excited about losing weight? If you are truly excited about losing weight for the right reasons - feeling better, looking better and improving your health, then you have good motivation. Wanting to drop weight fast for your class reunion isn't a good motivator - it's stressful and won't last you for the long term.
  • Am I really doing this for me? You have to be doing this for yourself and not simply to please someone else.
  • Have a gotten rid of the temptations in my house? This takes real commitment and is a good sign of whether you're serious about losing weight or not.
  • Am I willing to make the changes that I need to? Look at your plans for the next month. Will you be willing to forego that rich, fattening meal out with friends and order a salad or some nice broiled fish instead? Are you going to start making excuses every time a holiday rolls around?

If you immediately start thinking about the exceptions, then losing weight now probably isn't your top priority, so be honest with yourself. Shelve the idea for now and think about it again in a month - and in the meantime, think about all the reasons you should lose weight, so that you'll be more motivated and committed by then!
