Can Low Carb Diet Food Be Tasty, Too?

As anyone knows who's tried a low carb diet, food is the heart and soul of the plan. However, the mountains of protein and whole grains one ends up consuming can become a chore, as these foods generally need some work to get anything approaching real flavors.

One easy way to handle this challenge is through the use of low carb vegetables. Since your dietary needs include vegetables anyway, why not incorporate them into your cooking? Mushrooms, onions and garlic sautéed in a bit of butter (all allowed) makes a fantastic base for chicken. Spinach, wilted and drizzled with a little balsamic vinegar is a great bed for grilled fish or shrimp. The possibilities are endless.

Then there are herbs and spices. Here are just a few ideas:

  • Basil: Stuff a few leaves of fresh basil and half an onion into the body cavity of a whole chicken before roasting. The flavor will permeate the chicken beautifully.
  • Curry: One of the most widely used seasonings in the world, curry goes well withLow carb diet any meat. Curry likes a liquid base of some kind, so mixing it with melted butter or whole (or coconut) milk is a good choice. Let it cook for a couple of minutes before adding your meat, to wake up the flavors.
  • Oregano: Oregano is the low carb dieter's best friend, because it helps give the flavor of Italy to meats and fish. Stuff fresh oregano into a chicken or sprinkle a roast with dried leaves and you'll have the taste of Italy ... no pasta required.
  • Paprika: This is the spice that banishes the bland and spikes up the color in your low carb chicken and fish. Depending on the type of paprika you buy, you can add a sweet, spicy or smoky flavor. It's best to buy paprika in an herb shop or gourmet store, as freshness is very important. Online merchants are a good source, too.

You can also experiment with different cooking methods. For just a few dollars, you can get a smoker and some wood chips and start making those delicious smoked meats you pay top dollar for. Try braising, steaming and roasting. Whatever you do, you'll find new flavors that will make the food for your low carb diet taste like gourmet chow.
