Low Sodium Diet - The Foods to Enjoy and Avoid

A sodium-restricted diet can offer tremendous health advantages, especially to dieters spoonsuffering from high blood pressure or fluid retention. Aside from avoiding table salt, there are a number of healthy choices you can make to create a tasty and healthful menu.

Low Sodium Foods to Enjoy:

Treat yourself to a variety of foods from these categories:

  • Dairy products, including milk and yogurt.
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables like apples, bananas, broccoli, bean sprouts, cucumbers, lettuce and onions.
  • Grains and whole cereals like cornmeal, grits, oatmeal, shredded wheat and farina.
  • Unsalted nuts including cashews, roasted peanuts and walnuts.
  • Uncured meats, fish and poultry.

Stay Away from these Danger Foods:

If you are trying to reduce your sodium intake, steer clear of the following red-flag foods:

  • Fast food or take-out. Restaurant food is notoriously high is added salt.
  • Processed meats like hot dogs, bacon, canned ham and sausages.
  • Commercially processed cereals.
  • Frozen entrées. Some brands do offer a low-sodium option, but be sure to check the packaging. Even so-called "diet" foods are laden with salt.
  • Canned soups and sauces, including bullion.
  • Many seasonings and spice blends. They often contain large amounts of salt.
  • Any processed chips, snack crackers or other bagged treats.

Of course, before starting any diet plan, make an appointment with your health care provider to discuss all the pros and cons, and start eating your way to a healthier you!
