Magnesium And What Your Chocolate Cravings Are Saying

When you crave chocolate, it's not because you love the taste, although chocolate does taste heavenly. Researchers say most people crave chocolate because they have a magnesium deficiency.

Consuming healthful foods that are high in magnesium or taking a magnesium supplement can help you lose weight by reducing cravings for fattening foods such as chocolate.

What scientists discovered

According to researchers, magnesium can help alleviate symptoms of PMS. Many women crave chocolate just before their period. It's because their body needs magnesium, which can elevate your mood. By taking a magnesium supplement you may relieve bloating, leg swelling, breast tenderness and weight gain.

Scientists also believe magnesium can improve sleep disorders. That's important for weight loss because people who do not get adequate amount of sleep are more likely to gain weight, especially in their mid-section. The hormone cortisol, which holds onto fat around the abdomen, is more active in insomniacs.

How to include it in your diet

You can get more magnesium in your diet by eating whole grains, legumes, tofu, soybean flour, cashews, pumpkin seeds, blackstrap molasses and wheat bran. Leafy green vegetables are also an excellent source of magnesium.

Try eating more spinach, but make sure you cook the spinach thoroughly due to possible bacteria residue. Also, baked potatoes with the skin left on, oatmeal and bananas all contain magnesium.

Some herbs containing magnesium include cumin seed, poppy seed, tarragon, fennel seed, basil, sage, celery seed, dill weed, seaweed, tarragon and coriander.

Finally, magnesium can help people who are fatigued and lack energy. One study showed people with low magnesium levels in their muscles tired more quickly than those with higher levels.

According to experts, magnesium is the fourth most common mineral found in our bodies. Most of the magnesium in your body is found in your bones, while the rest is in organs, body tissues and to a lesser extent your blood.
