Maitake - Traditional Remedy for a Modern Problem

Using mushrooms for medicinal purposes is an ancient Japanese tradition, and the practice is becoming increasingly popular in Western culture. One mushroom in particular, the maitake mushroom, has been touted as a remedy for metabolic imbalances that can lead to diabetes, heart disease and related health problems.

Metabolic syndrome is characterized by increased insulin levels, elevated blood pressure, high triglyceride levels, and excess abdominal fat. It is thought that the syndrome, if left untreated, can easily escalate into Type 2 diabetes and other health issues.

A 1997 study at Georgetown University showed that compounds containing maitake can help control blood sugars by improving your body's ability to use the insulin it produces. The study also showed that maitake can help control blood pressure and improve digestive functions.

The product does show promise in helping people lose weight. Sold under several brand names, maitake is available in concentrated tablet forms, and as an ingredient in multi-herb supplements. Many health food stores also carry the mushroom as a tea, powder or tincture.

Look for maitake marketed under these brand names, among others:

  • Maitake D-Fraction T
  • Maitake SX Fraction T
  • Maitake Beta-Factor T

Be aware that human studies to this point have been limited, and research is ongoing. Make sure you check with your doctor before taking maitake supplements, especially if you are currently taking blood pressure or glucose medications.
