Mayo Clinic Grapefruit Diet Has Many VersionsThe so-called Mayo Clinic Grapefruit Diet originated over 30 years ago. It takes many forms, ranging from three to 12 days. Most all forms include grapefruit at each meal and unlimited vegetables and a low carbohydrate, high-protein and high-fat diet plan. This grapefruit diet stresses:
The celebrated Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota does not endorse this diet, claims it did not develop it and states that because of its nutritional imbalance it may be unhealthy for some people. The people who believe in this temporary diet plan feel that because of all the fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains, nuts and natural oils, it is a healthy option. They purport that it may reduce one's risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Claims are made that one can lose 52 pounds in two months although no actual statistics or success rates are cited. The grapefruit consumed at each meal is supposed to help jump-start the burning of fat. Critics of the diet argue that there are no proven "fat-burning properties" in grapefruit. They also caution that unlimited consumption of anything high in fat can be unhealthy. Patients on certain cholesterol-lowering medications may also be advised to avoid grapefruit products. Check with your doctor before starting this or any diet plan. |
