Try the modified Mediterranean diet for anti-aging benefits

The modified Mediterranean diet is an anti-aging diet modeled after the traditional Mediterranean diet found in countries of the Mediterranean basin, including Italy, Greece and Spain. This diet has been specifically designed to combat aging in the elderly and increase their life expectancy. A Mediterranean diet in Europeans has been shown to provide a longer life for older individuals. The modified Mediterranean diet allows anyone to apply the healthy benefits to their own life.

A main characteristic of Mediterranean diets is that the consumption of fats usually comes from olive oil, a more healthy unsaturated fat. The diet is also low in saturated fats, with fish, vegetables, legumes, fruit and bread being the most common foods. The fatty acids found in olive oil and fish such as omega-3 fatty acids are healthier than those found in red meat and other foods common in a typical American diet. Additionally, dairy products and sugary foods are consumed in very low amounts. Alcohol consumption is moderate and is usually in the form of red wine. One glass of red wine for women and two for men per day has proven to be beneficial to your health. Mediterranean diet salad

Other characteristics of modified Mediterranean diets include:

  • Fresh foods instead of frozen
  • Eating with others at a slower pace
  • Plant-based meals with little meat
  • Lots of fiber
  • Little eggs and butter

Studies have shown that healthy individuals that follow this diet can expect to live a little longer than their counterparts. The diet has also been shown to benefit people with heart disease and diabetes. Benefits of modified Mediterranean diets will not be felt without pairing your food choices with physical activity. Remember that the modified Mediterranean diet is not designed for quick weight loss, but rather a lifestyle that will lead to prolonged health.
