Niacin Helps Your Cholesterol

Niacin is one of the three most important B Vitamins that everyone needs for a healthy immune and circulatory system. Known sometimes as Vitamin B3, Niacin is usually found in foods that should be eaten in a healthy diet, so most people get enough of it these days.

Niacin helps lower cholesterol levels and clears fatty deposits in capillaries and blood vessels, improving circulation. This means that there is less chance of developing plaque or arthrosclerosis. For people with a history of heart disease, this can be important.

Foods that are rich in Niacin include beef liver, peanuts, white meat chicken, tuna, salmon and ground beef. You can also find Niacin in most breads today because the breads sold in stores are vitamin-enriched to ensure we get enough of the B-complex vitamins.

If you are low in Niacin, however, or feel that you might need to increase how much you Niacin, the formulaare getting, be careful how you take this in supplement form. One form of niacin, called niacin amide, can be taken in fairly high doses and be quite safe. You can also get as much as you need in a simple multi-vitamin supplement. Taking pure niacin, however, isn't recommended unless you are under the direct supervision of a doctor because it can cause liver damage if the dosage isn't carefully controlled. You may also get such side effects as flushing and headaches.

Obviously, Niacin is good for you in appropriate doses. The best way to get it is from the food you eat or from a good multi-vitamin supplement. Other than that, consult your doctor.
