Nutrition and Weight Loss - They Go Hand in Hand

With the plethora of fad diets, miracle supplements and prescription drugs available for weight loss, it's all too easy to overlook the most basic fact about dieting: eating the proper foods, in the proper amounts, is still the best way to lose weight and keep it off.

Proper nutrition begins with a close look at what types of foods you are eating. Choose foods as close as possible to their natural source. In other words, eat a fresh apple instead of commercially processed applesauce. Instead of prepared chicken nuggets, opt for a fresh chicken breast cooked on the grill. The closer the food is to its natural state, the more nutritious and healthful it will be as part of your diet.

Here are some more suggestions for improving nutrition while losing weight:

  • Eat five servings a day of fruits and/or vegetables. These are nutrient-dense, high in fiber, and will keep the cravings at bay.
  • Cut out packaged and processed foods. These are typically laden with salt, sugars and other non-nutritious ingredients.
  • Choose lean cuts of meat, fish and poultry. Grill, roast or broil them instead of frying.
  • Be aware that many breads, pasta and cereals contain added fats and sugars. Choose whole grain options when available.
  • Drink your milk. Studies have shown that low-fat dairy products, made with skim or 1% milk, can help in a healthy weight loss plan.

Choose foods for their nutritional value, and throw in a dose of daily exercise for good measure, and you'll be seeing positive results in no time!
