A Workable Diet: Break Obesity Cycle At Work

When it comes to obesity statistics, the facts are startling. More than 60 million Americans are overweight and more than 40 million are obese. Eight out of 10 Americans are overweight. When you look around at the people in your office or neighborhood, it's often hard to find a person who does not have a weight problem.

Most people in the workplace today are heavy because their jobs do not require physical labor. A sedentary office culture leads to a heavy workplace population.

But you can make a difference in your place of work by changing the dynamics.

Encourage a walk-and-talk meeting

Instead of inviting everyone to sit around the conference table, break the cycle of obesity by having walk-and-talk meetings. Create a mobile office environment.

When a client calls to set up a phone interview or meeting at a restaurant, suggest meeting at the gym instead and talking during a game of tennis or golf. Take every opportunity to get moving instead of sitting in front of a computer all day.

Break the doughnut habit

  • Some overweight people think they are being nice by bringing in homemade cupcakes or doughnuts to the office. But with so many people dealing with weight issues, it's better to bring healthful snacks.Breaking the doughnut habit: Obesity and Fitness
  • No one wants to be considered fat or chubby by their peers. You can prevent the embarrassment that comes with dieting by setting the tone for a healthful work atmosphere. Encourage people to bring fruit, salads, low-fat dishes to meetings and events.
  • Finally, start health and fitness challenges. Make it clear workers will not be penalized by going for a walk or to the gym in the middle of the day. Give workers prizes for losing the most weight, inches or body fat percentage.

Don't give out rewards such as gift certificates to restaurants unless it's a restaurant known for healthful smoothies, salads and healthful alternatives.

If you do have people who are obese and don't want to change, don't push them. Some people say they like to live large. Just set a good example and don't let yourself get obese.
