Making A Personal Fitness PlanStarting an exercise program can be a daunting task, but making a personal fitness plan can put everything in perspective and let you see it not as a monumental task, but as just another job to get done. The first step to take is to consult with your doctor and determine your fitness level. This is critically important, especially for those who are morbidly obese or who have not exercised in a long time. If it's been more than a couple of years since you walked a mile, got on a bike or hit the weight room, you very much need a doctor's advice. If you do decide to join a gym, consider your local YMCA. You'll get more than just a Once you've been cleared for activity, and have determined what level is safe and healthy for you, it's time to figure out what you like to do. Do you like swimming? How about walking? (Best to save the running until you're a bit more in shape.) Maybe a bicycle is more your style, or you'd like to hit the weight room. The options for exercise are countless. You might even want to go back to childhood to figure out what you'll enjoy doing. When you were 10 years old, and your mom told you to go outside and play, what did you do? Those bike rides or walks in the woods might just be the clue you're seeking. And don't limit yourself to conventional forms of exercise. I spent large portions of last summer and fall splitting firewood to stock my fireplace. Between finding the wood, loading it on my truck to bring home, unloading and chopping it, I got a full-body workout. Whatever you pick, be sure aerobic exercise is a big part of the picture. Yes, weight lifting is great for building muscle mass and increasing your resting calorie burn, but aerobic exercise is where you'll really melt the pounds away. You need to get your heart rate up for at least 20 minutes when you exercise to really reap the aerobic benefits, but anything is better than nothing! |
