Do You Really Need Prescription Diet Pills?

The prescription diet pill market is huge, and getting bigger all the time. Drug companies have learned that desperate dieters will throw vast amounts of money into whatever the latest, hottest, most highly touted diet nostrum happens to be. Billions of dollars are spent on TV commercials urging you to "ask your doctor about" whatever drug is being peddled.

What the commercials are telling you, of course, is to go pester your doctor into writing you a prescription for a magic pill to help you lose weight without exercise or cutting back on your eating.

The simple fact is that a very, very small percentage of the people who get diet pill diet pillsprescriptions actually need them. It's just a natural thing: We all want to find the easiest way to get a task accomplished, be it mowing the yard or losing weight. It's not that we're lazy (although that's true of some), it's simply that if we think we're being offered a technique that will cause us less upset, we'll try it.

Well, that will work for buying a new lawnmower, but not for a weight loss program. Long grass in the yard won't kill you 30 or 40 years early, but that big roll of fat around your middle surely will. If you are not committed to making significant changes in your eating habits, and to exercising as much as you're able, no weight loss program will work for you in the long term. Prescription pills or not, your diet is doomed if you are not mentally prepared to commit.

Now, this is not to say that the entire prescription diet drug industry is a sham. Most of these pills honest do have weight loss effects. Some of them block fat from being absorbed into the body. Some of them are psychoactive, helping with diet-related depression or hunger and cravings. Still others have a stimulant effect, to help with the blahs caused by sugar deprivation.

If you have tried and failed repeatedly to lose weight, and especially if your health is in imminent danger because of your excess weight, by all means consult with your doctor about a prescription pill. But if you are just starting your diet journey, or only have a few pounds to lose, give a more traditional diet program of sensible eating and exercise to work before you go grabbing a diet pill.
