Several diet books on the market today talk about why French women are so thin. Without a doubt, the secret is in the grapes, which contain resveratrol.

Resveratrol is an antifungal chemical found in the skin of pines, blueberries, peanuts and grapes.

In France, people enjoy drinking glasses of red wines and grape juice.

If you have ever tried the South Beach Diet, you know the author allows people to drink a glass of red wine during the second phase. That's because there are so many weight loss benefits to red wine, as long as you don't overindulge.

Secrets of juice fasting

One of the reasons people often lose weight while going on juice fasts is because they are consuming more resveratrol.

While the amount of the substance varies depending on the food you eat or what you Juice fastingdrink, red wine has more than white wine. There is about 5 mg/L in red wine because of the fact the red wine absorbs the substance during the fermentation process. In contrast, the skin is removed when making white wine.

Researchers say some of the benefits of resveratrol include a reduced cholesterol level and fat in the blood. Is it any wonder the French have fewer incidents of heart disease yet enjoy butter and olive oil along with their red wine.

Get more grapes

To get more resveratrol in your diet, drink more grape juice and whole red and purple grapes.

In the morning, try making a purple smoothie by combining 1 cup of pure, not-from-concentrate grape juice with 1/2 cup of blueberries, 1 cup of ice and 1 banana. As a variation, you may add a cup of non-fat yogurt.

Finally, it's important to choose the not-from-concentrate grape juice because otherwise you will be consuming added sugars.
