Running is consistently one of the most popular forms of exercise for adults today. Because it can be easily modified for everyone from the beginner to the expert, it's a great way to get in shape at your own pace.

Running has several positive effects on your health, including increased heart and lung capacity and a reduced risk of heart disease or stroke. It also tones the muscles of the lower body and strengthens the abdominal and back muscles. Add to that increase in your metabolism and you've got a great recipe for losing weight while toning your muscles. In fact, after running your metabolism stays elevated for several hours, so you burn more calories even at rest for a period of time after you've been running.

Interestingly, many people who run regularly don't put the health and weight loss benefits at the top of their list of reasons why they run. For many runners, it is an emotional outlet. Running helps relieve tension by stretching and contracting muscles you don't normally use repeatedly while allowing those that are usually tense (those in the neck and shoulder, for instance) to relax; a half-hour run can leave you feeling revitalized and fresh. Running also helps clear the mind and give you a fresh perspective by redirecting your focus - watching the scenery as you run, enjoying the sunrise or simply listening to the sounds of the neighborhood all clear your head. Your body also releases endorphins - feel-good chemicals in the brain - while running that can help combat depression and give you a sense of well-being.

Even with so many reasons to go running, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor before starting a running program. Health problems like arthritis or asthma don't necessarily have to stop you, but they will require extra caution and a healthy dose of awareness in order to get the most out of your jogging routine.
